![]() ![]() The outcome could have been so much worse. We are not used to these conditions & rely on the "expertise" of the rental car company to hire out safe & legal vehicles. My question is - why is Avis hiring out cars with illegal tyres and, where there is snow or the likelihood of snow, why are they hiring out cars that are 2 wheel drive? We're from Australia. Avis kindly deducted 2 days hire from our invoice. It was an all wheel drive with tread on all tyres. My father drove us to Manchester where we collected our car. After my 87 year old father drove us to the Concord address given to us by Avis, we were advised that Avis in Concord went out of business & that we should go to Avis in Manchester. Avis then advised us to collect our replacement car from Avis in Concord. ![]() The tow truck driver confirmed that the tyres were indeed bald & illegal. Avis sent a tow truck, from Vermont, to collect the car. We declined because we were concerned that the car wasn't roadworthy & would be illegal to drive it. We contacted Avis who suggested that we drive the car to the closest Avis dealer & they would swap the car over for us. Yes you can pick up Avis hire cars from Boston Logan International Airport. ![]() On reflection, when we collected the car, instead of just inspecting the body of the car we should have inspected the wheels of the car as well. The car could not be moved because, on inspection, the tread on the front tyres was below the legal requirement (almost bald) and as the car was a 2 wheel drive, it could not gain traction. My husband went to move the car so that the snowplough could clear the long driveway. We drove it to my father's place in Washington New Hampshire on the Saturday. We usually don't bother but because we expected to see some snow we thought it wise. As a precaution, we took out roadside assistance, which is a first for us. We collected it from Boston Logan International Airport. ![]() Only Avis can say what they'd charge so it sounds like you've got to ask them.My husband & I booked a car with Avis for 8 days in January 2020. A cab to Logan from most anywhere downtown is going to be at least $20 at that hour, from Cambridge or the 'burbs more. Not knowing when a "very early flight" is (9 am for me, I wish) nor where you're staying tonight it's impossible to give you an exact response for your situation, but it sounds like you pay either way. Meaning you either pay the extra (assuming it costs more) to return the car at Logan at 4 am - and it can be done: I did so last week for a 5.45 am flight - or return the car tonight and pay for the T back to your hotel if it'll get you there (or a cab if it won't) and a cab back to Logan in the morning because nowhere does the T start running until about 5:45 am, meaning getting to Logan by 6:15 am soonest. The Back Bay location opens at 7 on Saturday mornings, the other two at 8 am. The other stations at Government Center (apart from Logan closest to the airport but on the other end of the Sumner Tunnel near Quincy Market, North Station/Boston Garden, Downtown), the Back Bay (near Copley Place, Newbury St, etc.) and Harvard Square (in the Charles Hotel in Cambridge) are daytime only. Have you called Avis? Your options are somewhat limited in that Logan is the only Avis 24 hr location hereabouts. Perhaps, but I live here and I'm doubtful. ![]()
